In 2017, the Salamander Savers decided to tackle a global amphibian problem- chytrid. Our club wanted to know if the disease was present in the area around Woodglen Lake where we do most of our research and education. Unfortunately we did find the disease and are now trying to find ways to educate the public to keep chytrid from spreading. To see our video of water concerns in Fairfax County click here.
We are currently working with county officials, reporting our findings and trying to come up with solutions to prevent further spread of the disease. We wanted to put up signs educating people and asking them to disinfect their shoes after entering an area that is known to have chytrid. |
What is chytrid? It is the amphibian disease responsible for wiping out the population of Golden frogs in Panama.
|
How is it spread? The disease is a fungus that spreads through spores. The spores implant into amphibian tissue and cause death.
